FTSE 100 Index
The Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index, also called the FTSE 100 Index, FTSE 100, FTSE, or, informally, the "Footsie" /ˈfʊtsiː/, is a share index of the 100 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange with the highest market capitalization. It is seen as a gauge of prosperity for businesses regulated by UK company law. The index is maintained by the FTSE Group, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group.
The index began on 3 January 1984 at the base level of 1000; the highest closing value reached to date is 7103.98 (with an intra-day high of 7122.74), on 27 April 2015, the previous peak having been over 15 years previously, on the last trading day of 1999, during the dot-com bubble. After falling during the financial crisis of 2007-2010 to below 3500 in March 2009, the index recovered to a peak of 6091.33 on 8 February 2011, fell under the 5000 mark on the morning of 23 September 2011, but reached its record high on the market close of 27 April 2015, more than doubling in value from the crash in 2009. It then went into a bear market, closing at 5537 on 11 February 2016.

While 2022 was a really poor year, the FTSE 100 actually returned positive numbers and far outpaced the S&P; 500. I hold Vanguard's FTSE 100 ETF in my portfolio and I still think it is the best FTSE 100 variant (for me anyway).

While 2022 was a really poor year, the FTSE 100 actually returned positive numbers and far outpaced the S&P; 500. I hold Vanguard's FTSE 100 ETF in my portfolio and I still think it is the best FTSE 100 variant (for me anyway).

An Index can be defined either by what it is or what it does. It is a “basket of stocks” but that doesn't really tell us much. What it does is let people see how well a stock market is performing.
So what is a stock market index? Even if you’ve never traded before, it’s still likely that you’ve heard of indices in some way – names like Dow Jones, Standard & Poor’s, Nikkei and FTSE feature in the news almost every day.
Each index contains a number of stocks (hence the ‘basket’ analogy). Common ones are:

Dow Jones Industrial Average: The ‘Dow’ contains stocks of the 30 largest US companies. The word ‘Industrial’ here is a red herring; the index contains stocks such as Microsoft and Walt Disney which have zilch to do with ‘heavy industry’
Standard & Poors 500: contains stocks of the 500 largest US companies
Nasdaq 100: contains stocks of the 100 largest companies on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange. Nasdaq has generally attracted technology stocks so the index has become a proxy for technology companies
Hang Seng Index: a market capitalization-weighted index of forty-nine companies that are traded on the Hong Kong Exchange.
Nikkei 225: sometimes referred to as the Nikkei-225 or N-225. It includes 225 companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

In the World of trading words like “Dax”, “Footsie”, “support”, “resistance”, “forex pair” can all be a bit confusing. So here is a video about the FTSE 100 (pronounced “footsie one hundred”) - the 100 largest UK companies on the Financial Times Stock Exchange.
Together with our Chief Market Strategist David Jones, we go over the principles that determine which UK companies are in the index, or are substituted every three months, as well as how to understand its movements and how to trade it.
So what is the FTSE 100 index? It represents the 100 companies with the highest value on the London Stock Exchange and is responsible for the largest volume of shares being exchanged every day on the exchange. The reason for this is that FTSE 100 trading represents the best (and possibly the easiest) way to take part in the overall growth of the UK stock market.
It’s also known as the UK 100 index and can be considered as the simplest entry point to gain an understanding of the UK stock market for beginners. Index trading for beginners isn’t too different than trading forex, individual stocks or gold but it does require a certain amount of knowledge and experience of how indices work and how individual companies or groups of companies (like financial, healthcare, etc.) can impact its price.

While 2022 was a really poor year, the FTSE 100 actually returned positive numbers and far outpaced the S&P; 500. I hold Vanguard's FTSE 100 ETF in my portfolio and I still think it is the best FTSE 100 variant (for me anyway).
Let's take a look at the fund, its holdings, fees and past performance! It has been a while since I've looked into an ETF on the channel so let me know if there are anymore you'd like to see!

What is an Index?
An Index can be defined either by what it is or what it does. It is a “basket of stocks” but that doesn't really tell us much. What it does is let people see how well a stock market is performing.
So what is a stock market index? Even if you’ve never traded before, it’s still likely that you’ve heard of indices in some way – names like Dow Jones, Standard & Poor’s, Nikkei and FTSE feature in the news almost every day.
Each index contains a number of stocks (hence the ‘basket’ analogy). Common ones are:

FTSE 100: contains stocks of the 100 largest companies quoted on the London Stock Exchange
FTSE 350: contains stocks of the 350 largest companies quoted on the London Stock Exchange
FTSE 250: which are the companies listed in the FTSE 350 but not the FTSE 100 … ie companies that are large but not large enough to make the top 100
ISEQ: contains stocks of the 60 or so companies listed on the Irish Stock exchange
DAX 30: contains stocks of the 30 largest German companies
Dow Jones Industrial Average: The ‘Dow’ contains stocks of the 30 largest US companies. The word ‘Industrial’ here is a red herring; the index contains stocks such as Microsoft and Walt Disney which have zilch to do with ‘heavy industry’
Standard & Poors 500: contains stocks of the 500 largest US companies
Nasdaq 100: contains stocks of the 100 largest companies on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange. Nasdaq has generally attracted technology stocks so the index has become a proxy for technology companies
Hang Seng Index: a market capitalization-weighted index of forty-nine companies that are traded on the Hong Kong Exchange.
Nikkei 225: sometimes referred to as the Nikkei-225 or N-225. It includes 225 companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

FTSE 100 Index
The Financial Times Stock Exchange 100 Index, also called the FTSE 100 Index, FTSE 100, FTSE, or, informally, the "Footsie" /ˈfʊtsiː/, is a share index of the 100 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange with the highest market capitalization. It is seen as a gauge of prosperity for businesses regulated by UK company law. The index is maintained by the FTSE Group, a subsidiary of the London Stock Exchange Group.
The index began on 3 January 1984 at the base level of 1000; the highest closing value reached to date is 7103.98 (with an intra-day high of 7122.74), on 27 April 2015, the previous peak having been over 15 years previously, on the last trading day of 1999, during the dot-com bubble. After falling during the financial crisis of 2007-2010 to below 3500 in March 2009, the index recovered to a peak of 6091.33 on 8 February 2011, fell under the 5000 mark on the morning of 23 September 2011, but reached its record high on the market close of 27 April 2015, more than doubling in value from the crash in 2009. It then went into a bear market, closing at 5537 on 11 February 2016.
